Antique American Large Clam Shape Union Porcelain Works (UPW) Oyster Plate
Before th first bid, we welcome offrers on this oyster plate. After bidding starts, we can no longer accept offers.
Union Porcelain Works of Greenpoint, New York, was the first and foremost company in the United States to make oyster plates. They made two clam shaped plates of different sizes and a round oyster plate. Offered here is the larger clam shaped plate. This plate has six wells for oysters and a seventh different well for sauce. From the beginning the company decorated its plates with three dimensional sea creatures and other nautical items. They were always hand decorated and it would be unlikely to find two plates exactly alike. On this plate we find several interesting decorations including a green frog. Also we find a crab, a snail and shells of various shapes and sizes. The central background color is pink, including the three dimensional seaweed. The plate is lustrous, indicating little use. Gilt accents add further luster. The longest dimension is 10.25" and across the middle is 7.5". There is a tiny firing bump on the front edge of the plate and the foot of the plate has very minor roughness, more felt than seen. On the back we find "UPW" in black and the company logo (an eagle with an "S" in its beak) and a patent date of "Jan. 4, 1881". There is also a second mark in yellow with "Union Porcelain Works Greenpoint, NY."
